Hand-knotted in Afghanistan sometime between 1955–1970, this vintage Baluch rug showcases a striking pictorial field composed of alternating stylized birds and cypress trees arranged in a rhythmic grid. Rich in symbolism, the bird motifs traditionally represent protection and freedom, while the cypress has long been associated with resilience, longevity, and eternal life throughout Persian art.
Woven from wool on a wool foundation, the rug displays the earthy palette that has made Baluch textiles so enduring—deep madder reds, walnut brown, forest green, charcoal, and warm ivory. The crisp geometric borders beautifully frame the highly graphic composition, giving the piece both structure and movement.
Its elongated proportions make it an exceptional choice for an entryway, hallway, library, or layered beneath a dining table or bed. Equal parts folk art and functional textile, this is a rug that immediately becomes the focal point of a room.
